Spartacus Blood and Sand

Spartacus Blood and Sand

Rating: C-
Ages: 21 and Up

Whoa! This is the ultimate guy show and wasn't really anything like I had expected. This is a Starz Originals show and I have to say that this is anything but original. This is a show unlike any other I have seen before. Language is extremely terrible, there is a lot of blood and gore and this show isn't shy about female/male nudity and shows a lot of sexual scenes.

The show in all is about Spartacus played by the late Andy Whitfiled (Gabriel) and how he was betrayed by the Roman army and then forced itno a sort of slavery. Bought and trained as a fighter he must become a Gladiator and win the hearts of the crowd so that he may one day buy his freedom to be reunited with his wife.

The show in general is a time fram and genre that I really enjoy learning about and following.  In that sense though all the other things that I mentioned above are very extrmeme and take away from the show for me that is. I found myself thinking who would I even watch this show with? I would have to be very comforttable with that person cause some points I found myslef a little embarrassed watching it just by myself.  However, TV Guide Magazine calls the show, "Visually Dazzling and Complex." There may be different reviews out there that are quite the opposite as the one i gave but nonetheless the show is an extreme one.

Dexter- Season 3

Dexter- Season 3

Rating: B+
Ages: 16 and Up

Dexter is back. I hope you can tell just how much I have enjoyed this show being that three of the four reviews so far have been about Dexter. This show has it all for me and once again they bring their "A" game, in this the most recent season that I have viewed. All the characters are back which I love and of course with each new season some new ones are introduced.

This season has a new friend and ally in the Assistant District Attorney Miguel Prado played by Jimmy Smits (NYPD Blue). After the murder of Prado's brother, the ADA is curious what exactly Dexter does with his spare time. As Dexter and him continue to grow their friendship so do their interests. After learning some interesting things Prado decides to "cut" some corners in the legal system and take action into his own hands. Meanwhile, the team at Miami Metro look into the "Skinner" killings that has all of Miami on suspense. Juggling his work, hobbies, his new friend Miguel Prado, Dexter and his girlfriend Rita try to plan a wedding all while Rita is pregnant with their child.

This season is just as enjoyable as the others. The same things go into this one as the others that were reviewed. The same swearing, blood and occasional nudity still come up. However, this show is probably the best TV show out there right now. It constantly leaves me on my seat guessing what is going to happen next. It always leaves me wanting more and gets me more and more excited to start the next season with every passing episode. I hope you enjoy it cause I certainly do!

Homeland- Season 1

Homeland- Season 1

Rating: A
Ages: 14 and Up

Homeland is the most recent TV series that I have completed and I have to say that I was entertained... Alot.  First off let me put this out there right now, Homeland is not really a sitting on the edge of seat type of show.  By that I mean there isn't alot of guns shooting, bombs blowing up and all that jazz that usually go along with these types of shows.  This show is very well written and keeps you in intrigued as if you were trying to solve the mysteries it brings yourself.

Homeland is from the producers of the Fox hit show "24" so you can get a basic idea of what this show is somewhat like without watching it and have had some knowledge about 24.  However, this is on Showtime so it is a little more intense and some scenes can catch you off guard if your not really paying attention.

Homeland is a show about an Amercian Prisoner of War named Nicholas Brody played by Damian Lewis (Dreamcatcher) and his return home from his time "served" in the Iraq war.  However, a very passionate agent named Carrie Mathison played by Claire Danes (StarDust) is suspected of Brody to have been turned into an Al Qaeda terrroist who plans to attack the United States.  The entire season follows the heroic return of a POW while Carrie tries to uncover the truth behind his disappearance.

This season was very enjoyable to watch and had me hooked from the start.  As I mentioned above there isn't a whole lot of action that goes on but it has its own unique way of keeping you hooked.  "Homeland is well made and gripping...almost impossible to resist."- New York Times.  Im in agreement with this and hope you get a chance to watch this show, you won't be dissappointed.

Dexter- Season 2

Dexter- Season 2

 Rating: B+
Ages: 16 and Up

Dexter Season 2 brings the same A game as it did in the first season.  So you may be wondering why I gave this season a lower grade than the first.  Well, a new character in this season, Lila Tourney (Jamie Murray) plays Dexters "sponser" and to be blunt she drives me nuts. Maybe thats how her role was depicted but I was not a fan.  At times I had to turn away from my TV when she was on cause I couldn't handle her role or acting.

I feel this season is more suspenseful than the first.  The FBI gets called in as they are track the "Bay Harbor Butcher" which is Dexter's killings brought to surface (literally).  As Dexter continues to satisfy what he calls his "Dark Passenger" he also starts to unravel more and more about his spotty childhood.  While becoming  acqauinted with his girlfriend Rita Bennett (Julie Benz) and her kids he still juggles work and all his unique hobbies.  Futhermore, one of Miami Metro's own: Sgt. James Doakes played by Erik King suspects something off with Dexter and becomes interested in his personal life and begins to stalk Dexter after work hours.  Doakes has a very unique set of skills that lead him to uncovering some unusal things about Dexter and he finds himself dealing with those findings face to face.

All the same elements of the first season are in this one too such as the swearing and some blood. I didnt notice it as much this season, however, maybe I simply just got used to it from the previous.  All the stars are back, and in this season they start to bring in Dexter's co-workers a little more which I liked too.  I would have given this season a higher grade but as mentioned above I didn't like one of the characters.  The suspense in this will leave you dying for more Dexter and wanting season three sooner rather than later.  Once again I hope you enjoy the post and more importantly the show.

Dexter- Season 1

Dexter- Season 1

Rating: A
Ages: 16 and Up

Dexter played by Michael C. Hall (Six Feet Under) is unlike anything else on TV right now.  While most murder solving shows can solve the crime in one full episode (45 minutes); Dexter follows one serial murderer for the whole season giving more to the viewer. With a different twist on the show, you can easily find yourself addicted to this show within the very first couple of episodes.

Dexter Morgan not only works for the Miami Metro but he also has some unique hobbies of his own.  While trying to balance his time between being a full time employee, he also juggles his peersonal life and the life he trys to live to look normal.  This season follows the killings of the Ice Truck Killer who leaves the victims neatly placed in unique spots.  The team at Miami Metro (including Dexter) is full of great characters that easy to like. Also placed at Miami Metro is Dexter's sister Deborah Morgan played by Jennifer Carpenter (Quarintine) who is an up an coming police officer trying to learn the ropes of the system.

Dexter is easily one of the best TV shows out there right now, however, it is seen on Showtime so (personally) I can only see season by season instead of episode of episode. This show at times can get pretty bloody and violent so it may not be for the weak stomached person.  My only problem with this show is how ridiculous some of the language can get. Swearing doesn't bother me at all but when its overdone like this show does (and it does often) it hurts the rest of the show. Other than that I find nothing wrong with this show and hope everyone enjoys it as much as I do.

Me in a Nut Shell

Hey there guys and gals my name is Kenny Barrus. Im going to be giving you a little background on myself so you can get an idea of what im and this blog is like.  First off i'm a huge sports fanatic!  Whether it be team sports (basketball, baseball, football), or single sports (tennis, golf, swimming) I watch and follow them.  I am curerently studying a Communications degree at Utah Valley University to help me further persue my love for sports into a career.  I also love working out, movies and new TV shows that come out.  Which brings me to my blog (first ever).

With so many new movies and TV shows that are out its really hard to get a good understanding of what the show or movie is about without first spending the money on it.  I'll be the first one to say that I have wasted way too much money on movies that were supposed to be 'good', when in reality it was nothing better than crap.  This is where the blog and I come in handy.  I will try to attend some new and popular movies that come out as often as I can to give you an idea of what its like, as well as some new TV shows that come out on DVD.  You are always welcome to give me comments or suggestions on what to watch and even your own thoughts on the movies or shows that a review.  Without further ado I hope you enjoy the blog and what it has to offer.
